I was living in a small apartment with a roommate when I wrote this one. The roommate worked a 9-5 job and I was a freelance graphic designer, so my hours were more flexible and I could often fit songwriting and demo-recording into daytime hours when I had the place to myself.
I had just joined The Broken Hearts after answering their ad for lead guitar/vocal in a local paper, The Hartford Advocate. After working out the idea for this song and making a bare-bones sound-on-sound demo, I presented my first original to the band. I was thoroughly jazzed when the guys dug it.
The lyrics reflect a developing romance with unexpected communication issues. I had envisioned Everly Brothers-style harmonies (supplied by Michael) on the second halves of the verses and on the bridge, which also included harmonized “Uh-Huhs” and “Oh-Yeahs” - a mini-tribute to the Everly’s tune, TILL I KISSED YOU. (I doubt, though, that the Everly’s would ever have sung the lyrics, “In-depth analyses are overrated, uh-huh.”)
The melodic lead guitar break is double-tracked. I always thought Jamie’s bass line on this song was especially inspired; I love the way it dances around the beat. I would never have thought of that myself. As we recorded the repeats of the last line at the end of the song, Pat made another “happy accident” on the drums that we decided to keep.

JUST LOVE YA’
(Thomas J. Bittel)
What can I say when you ask me how I feel?
What is only imagined and what is real?
Simple, I say, look me in the eyes and you'll see
I just love ya', and that's the way I want it to be
What are you thinking, that you won't let out?
Talk to me, baby, I really care what it's about
Good news or bad, I want you to tell it to me
I just love ya', whether you're mine or you're free
My love for you is so uncomplicated
But it runs so deep that I can't hide
In-depth analyses are overrated
Sometimes you think too much
Let's not wander too far off the track
I'd really hate to think that we can't get back
Complicating matters doesn't agree
I just love ya', and that's the way I want it to be
