about

Ever and again, a title can take on energy all its own and breathe new life into what a song becomes.

MEDITATION is an ideal example. That word followed me around and I couldn't help but endeavor to write a somewhat hypnotic, dream-like song around it. An image of meditation alone was enough for me to - in my mind - try and draw an aural picture of what meditation would approximate if it made a sound. Applying melodies and harmonies, The Rooks aimed to capture a certain state of serenity.

In order of appearance, Double-Rs (Records and Rooks) guitar masters Huw Gower and Kristin Pinell touch all the right chakra centers as Gower's medicine-man thundercrack ultimata threads to-and-fro around Pinell's narcotic, 6-stringed mantra. The bottom-end (drums and bass) heavy lifting via Patrick Yourell and Anne Benkovitz only amplifies our good vibrations.

And interestingly enough, the word meditation is nowhere to be found. Those lyrics stand as a cryptic, one-sided conversation piece - written in code.

Whose code?

Who knows?

MEDITATION
(Words & music by Michael Mazzarella)

What I know took awhile
But it's true about you
Do you know where I've been?
Where and when ask yourself

Heard it before in a letter
Read it before on a line
Never but once did it matter
It's on my mind

It's all done, don't move on
Find someone if you can
I've enough, read my page
I give in, good for you

Knew me before in a lifetime
Don't you remember the scene?
You were someone in the mainstream
I could not hide

Waste no time, it's on you
I won't fret, don't forget
Green and blonde, it sounds good
Where's the fun in our time?

In our time
