As much as I take pride in the process of songwriting, it can be a solitary, introspective process. Perhaps as a result of that I’ve often sought the opportunity to collaborate with other songwriters and musicians. That interaction can turn the songwriting process into an afternoon filled with jokes, jabs, interesting innovation, and discovery. That was the case with YOU WON'T FIND ME, certainly.

Michael Mazzarella and I met because I was sitting on the lawn of my apartment playing an acoustic guitar, when Michael happened by on the way to the laundry room from his own apartment. We’d had no idea another musician was living in such close proximity. He listened to my mostly unfinished songs and I listened to his. We bonded and formed the nucleus of what would one day become The Broken Hearts. YOU WON'T FIND ME was mostly finished when I approached Michael with it. Having his input made the song better, I’m sure. But it also helped us bond in a way a solo composition never could.

When I think of this song today, decades after it was recorded, I see a great irony in it. While the song is about a romantic relationship gone wrong, the birth of that song was a strong brick in the foundation of the relationship Michael and I forged in the early 1980s and still maintain today.
